Two major components in the house!

Progress is slow ... but lots of research and planning is also in progress and I will still need a primary to commence mock-up and alignment.

A couple of major parts of been procured and trust the reader will enjoy seeing what they are. This should move it along quite nicely! :-)

Firstly the Engine, and what an engine it is. Its just Right! (not too big, not too small).

I'm back ...

Its been a while, but I am back.

Some progress has been made with mounting the brake disc rotors and the rear drive pulley.

Here they are...

Front Wheel assembly

Using a chrome Super Spoke rotor, with factory HD mounting bolts. Nice!

Rear Wheel assembly

Using the same style Drive pulley as the rotor (Super Spoke). Again with factor HD mounting bolts.

On to axle spacers next ... and to work out the steering fork stop kit.

Tyres have been mounted

The Tyres are mounted!!

They look fantastic. Exactly what I was after. Take a look.

Specs

Rear is a 18" x 8.5" with a mounted 240mm Metzeler, the front is a 21" x 3.5" with a mounted 120/70V21 tyre. This bike will just say Easy Rider :-) when rolling.

Front Forks

Well the all chrome one's are on their way back to Victoria. In place the black/ chrome version should be in my greasy hands early next week. I can't wait to get the new springer front-end mounted.

Mock-up Prep

Firstly the frame. Not sure if I should powder-coat it and then perform the mock-up or do that after, obviously protecting the fresh new coating from knocks etc.

Thoughts?

I also need to place an order for brake rotors and the rear drive pulley... to get started on the alignment. From everything I've seen and read, the alignment is critical to balance, drive and wear of components. Common-sense really. Spacers came with the rear axle, and my frame along with the 240 rear are setup so the drive will be on the LHS (rear brake on the RHS). No overall balance or alignment issues. (that was planned by the way!).

Inventory taken and the mock-up commences

Inventory taken and the mock-up commences

First to check if I have everything!

OK, so I'm a few days slow with the blog. I actually ticked off everything on the inventory list last Sunday. In short - everything is there!

So what did I start with? Here's an extract of my BoM.

Yes, the devil is in the detail...

In my book, the difference between good and great is in the detail. So here it is!

The Frame - Specs

Part Number - TT-K15073
A Softail frame (EVO model), because there is just so many parts available for the EVO. Parts from 1984 - 1999 will fit this easy. Is a heavy/ strong frame. Definitely not a light weight European frame, which will come in handy when I drop an engine that can develop 150/160HP! Maybe even nitrous! Mmmm, nitrous!
  1. 230-250 Tyre fitment (I have a 240mm)
  2. 1 1/4" tubing
  3. 34 Deg rake, 2" stretch
  4. Comes with the rear section assembly and 1" axle kit
Here is the main part of the frame mounted and strapped down to my bike lift

The Front Suspension - Specs

Part Number - ATT-FS1004
First mistake made here. Due to some mix-up in the ordering (no one's fault), I thought I had he black and chrome version coming my way. Instead the full chrome version arrived. It looks great, don't get me wrong, its just way too much chrome (for my build).

Note the black and chrome version on my first page. That is the one I am after.

The Rear Suspension - Specs

Part Number - (part of main frame assembly)
1" axle kit included. at first not exactly sure which way this thing adjoined the main frame, but after some study as to how the shock absorbers attach to the rear frame, it was pretty straightforward.
Here it is mounted to the frame, with rear axle in place. Note: Spacers on the rear axle (all part of the kit). Cool!

I have a dream!

The Bike Build!

My first build! After watching many others do it, I am going to apply my mechanical knowledge, roll up the sleeves, ditch the suit and get my hands dirty.

Concept

I've owned one, I've seen many others build their own on TV and on the web. So the decision was made to build my own after my wife agreed I could get another bike. This was a compromise as I wanted a second car (and there's just no space for another car!). I must also blame a guy called Luke Ray (luke@fuel-press.com) and his Fuel and his Tank Moto mag's for a lot of inspiration. Though my bike is not a barn find or anything like that, I LOVE bikes (and cars) and these mags and the builds within it. Much respect to the builders out there and I haven't even started! This will be a challenge.

The build, you ask? Having owned a Softail, I wanted another in that style rear end to endure our quality roads (not!). I've also always loved the look of the Springer front-end, so one of those has been procured also. Engine. Well, one characteristic sprung to mind. I wanted an engine with enough power to lay down a thick black line (if so desired, and on the track in a controlled environment, :-)).

I'll match this monster powerplant up with a Baker 6 speed, and am yet to decide on a carb or EFI system. Open to listening to pros and cons out there. the get the grip (or lack thereof) down onto the black stuff, a 240mm rear will work. I love raw, naked and classic bikes (next project) but I do really like the phat rear ends.

We're off and running - 1st Shipment!

So after a few conversations with shops, research on the internet, the first order was placed. A shout out to Ian at VPW for all his help here.

25th August: Today the 1st shipment of parts arrived! The concept of building my own V-twin seemed all very straight forward until now! The parts are in the shed and somehow I now need a damn good meccano instruction book to start this.

So the inventory of the 1st order?

  • A Kraftech Softail Style 230/240/250 Pro street frame (1 1/4" tubing, 34deg rack).

  • A set of Metzeler tyres, (front-120/70/21, rear-240x18)

  • Front Wheel - Max Spoke Front 21X3.5 Single .750” Black Chrome Black

  • Rear Wheel - Max Spoke Rear 18X8.5 1” Black Chrome Black
  • Front Suspension - Black Springer Fork Std 22'

Second hand bars and risers (from eBay), will work fine for the mock up until I need to run cables and finally decide on the bars I like.

All mounting bolts for the suspension, axles etc and the steering head stop kit also form the 1st order. So I basically have a rolling chassis without any tins (tanks, guards/ fenders etc).

The wheels are very impressive and look fantastic now, and will fit the bill nicely on the completed bike.

Let me know what you think? I know its not for everyone.
